My First Birth Experience, AKA Why I Like Homebirth Part 2

Here is part 2 of my first delivery…in a hospital….(stay tuned for the video version as well as the other 8 birth stories!!)

Of course everyone knows about how much rest someone gets in a hospital and this experience was no exception. I had a nurse as well as the baby (at least they were letting the baby “room in” with me) and do you think they could get these visits coordinated? Of course not, it’s a hospital…they do things efficiently you know!

Then there is that dastardly I.V. I still had to have that thing for some time after delivery. I had to haul it to the bathroom and try working around all that trying to take care of all my feminine needs (did I mention my torn perineum?) all the while by myself and having little strength left to make it back to bed…where was everyone when I needed them?

Sure enough- they absolutely DID come into my room just as I was beginning to get some sleep and ask me if I was resting okay. DUH! It was maddening! And all that was during the night!

You can bet that the day time was no better. The baby was a little jaundiced so they took him out to be under the lights for a while. Then came the cascade of interruptions again.

Sign this, sign that- oh that was the other lady-this is for something different….Hello, let me show you how to care for the baby. Later, let me show you how to use the car seat. Later still, do you have welfare? Here…just sign your name on the dotted line and it’s all free….Sorry, we actually pay our own bills, thank you…you poor dear…not smart enough to take welfare….and so on…….

It was so unbelievable that we did finally leave AWOL. We signed what we needed to, set up the baby’s well visit for the PKU and left.

And believe it or not, I left some stuff out.
Definitely not all birth experiences are like this and some are even worse for sure. I know that some women enjoy delivering in the hospital just fine and some doctors are way better and more flexible than others (my 8th delivery suggests just that).

Sometimes what we don’t know will definitely hurt us even though we may never know it.

I am so very glad and thankful that I found a better way to give birth.
