The Birthing (Un)Plan

There are certain things that you will need to remember when considering how to create your birthing plan. It is a great idea to have a birthing plan, but just keep in mind that no birth can be controlled and guided perfectly. As long as you are open to the fact that your birth will be uniquely your birthing experience – then you are all set. This is why I call it the birthing (un)plan. You are planning, but you are also flexible and relaxed. You are planning for a wonderful experience and you are prepared for any surprises that could unlikely pop up.

A birthing plan can help you and those that are involved with your labor and delivery understand exactly how you would like things to go. You can specify things like: who you want in the room and during which parts, room lighting, clothing options, music, pictures/video, etc. There are many other areas to address like options during labor, emergency situations, non-progressing situations, pain relief, and even postpartum topics.

Regarding pain relief, it is a great idea to be very clear on what types of pain management are acceptable for you and what your preferences are. You will want to be specific about what drugs (if any) are allowed to be used.

Postpartum: you want to make sure to state how you will be feeding your baby and where you want your baby at all times. If you are in the hospital you can make sure that your partner is with the baby at all times. You can also request that any routine procedures be cleared through you ahead of time – that way there are no surprises or disagreements.

There are numerous areas to cover when creating your birthing plan. The main idea (whether you are having your baby at home or in the hospital) is to make sure you do your research and list exactly what works for you. Think of the tiniest details and run it through your mind. Grab a book from your nearest library or online/local bookstore. Ask other moms about what they might have done differently if they were to do it again. You will be able to clearly picture and make a good plan your ideal birthing experience.
